Baby-Care

Baby care: gentle, fragrance-free, paediatrician-aware.

Newborn skin is roughly 30 percent thinner than adult skin and absorbs topicals far more readily. Their detoxification pathways are still maturing, their gut microbiome is in active assembly, and their body weight is small enough that ordinary doses become relatively large. The margin for error on what you apply or feed a baby is genuinely smaller than for an adult.

This collection is the short list we feel comfortable recommending: unscented Dr Bronner castile soaps for bath and washing, Badger mineral sunscreen and bug spray, Little Gems homeopathic kits for teething and minor upsets, and a small group of paediatric omega and gentle remedies. Anything supplement-related for an under-2 should go past your paediatrician first.

What is actually happening

  • Newborn skin is thinner

The stratum corneum, the outer skin barrier, is still developing in the first year. Topicals absorb more readily and any solvent, preservative, or fragrance compound reaches circulation in greater proportion than it would in an adult.

  • Fragrance and dyes irritate

Synthetic fragrance and added colour are the two most common triggers for infant contact dermatitis and eczema flares. Choose unscented or essential-oil-only options and keep ingredient lists short.

  • Mineral sunscreen only for under-2s

Paediatric guidance is to avoid chemical sunscreen filters (oxybenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene) in babies under six months and to prefer zinc oxide mineral formulas for toddlers. Shade, hats, and long sleeves still beat any SPF for the youngest babies.

  • When to call your paediatrician

Persistent fever in an infant, refusal to feed, listlessness, rashes that spread quickly, or any breathing change is a doctor visit, not a remedy. Homeopathic and supportive products are for minor, self-limiting situations alongside, not instead of, paediatric care.

How we think about it

FOUNDATION

Gentle daily basics

Unscented castile soap for bath time, a mineral sunscreen for outdoor walks, a fragrance-free bug spray for mosquito country. These are the few daily-use products almost every baby benefits from.

BUILD

Targeted support, paediatrician-approved

Paediatric omega-3 drops for brain development, gentle homeopathic kits for teething and minor digestive upset. Discuss any supplement with your paediatrician before introducing it, especially under 6 months.

SPECIALTY

Mother and pregnancy support

Pregnancy multivitamins and gentle remedies for the mother. A well-nourished, calm caregiver matters more to a young baby than any product in the cot.

Common questions

When can I start using sunscreen on my baby?
Standard paediatric guidance is to keep babies under six months out of direct sun entirely, using shade, hats, and clothing. From six months onward, a mineral zinc oxide sunscreen on exposed areas is appropriate. Avoid chemical filters until at least age two.
Is castile soap safe for daily baby baths?
Unscented Dr Bronner liquid castile, well diluted in bathwater, is generally well tolerated by infants. Avoid the scented versions in the first year, since even natural essential oils can be irritating to newborn skin.
Should I give my baby an omega-3 supplement?
Discuss with your paediatrician first. Breastfed babies usually get adequate DHA from a mother taking her own omega-3 supplement. Formula-fed babies on standard infant formula may benefit from a paediatric DHA drop, but the call belongs with your doctor.
Are homeopathic teething remedies actually useful?
In our experience, homeopathic teething sprinkles and granules are a gentle option for low-grade discomfort. They are not a substitute for medical assessment if your baby has high fever, dehydration, or persistent distress.
What ingredients should I avoid on infant skin?
Synthetic fragrance (parfum), parabens, phthalates, chemical sunscreen filters (oxybenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene), and SLS. These appear in many mainstream baby ranges despite the marketing.
My baby has eczema, what should I try?
Talk to your paediatrician or a paediatric dermatologist first to confirm diagnosis and rule out food triggers. As gentle baseline care, unscented castile, fragrance-free moisturiser, lukewarm baths, and cotton clothing are usually well tolerated. Skip everything scented while the skin is reactive.
Can I use these products during pregnancy?
Most of the mother-facing products in this collection (pregnancy multivitamin, unscented soaps, mineral sunscreen) are pregnancy-safe. Avoid essential-oil-heavy products in the first trimester and check anything you are unsure about with your midwife or obstetrician.
