The story

Nature's Choice was founded in 1985 as the retail arm of the Natural Health Foundation, making it one of the longest-running wholefood brands in South Africa. Four decades on, the operation runs out of an FSSC 22000 accredited factory in Randvaal, Gauteng, supplying nuts, seeds, dried fruit, superfood powders, salts, sweeteners, and pantry staples to health stores, retailers, and direct customers nationwide.

The brand's positioning is unfashionably simple: source good raw ingredients, package them without preservatives or synthetic additives, sell them at prices that working South Africans can actually afford. There is no celebrity founder, no acquisition by a multinational, no rebrand to chase the latest wellness trend. The Nature's Choice range is what stocks the pantry of most health-conscious SA households, from spirulina powder to activated charcoal to Himalayan salt. The factory's halaal and kosher certifications, alongside the FSSC 22000 food safety standard, are the credentials that get the products onto retailer shelves; the price-per-gram is what keeps them coming back.
Honest, uncompromised, unerringly pure. Forty years and we still write that on every bag.

About this brand

Common questions customers ask about the brand and its products.

Where is Nature's Choice based?
Randvaal, Gauteng. The factory has been operating from this location for most of the company's history. The brand is sometimes assumed to be Cape Town based, but the manufacturing and head office are in Gauteng. The products are distributed nationwide through health stores and major retailers.
What is the difference between Nature's Choice and Nature's Nutrition?
They are sister brands from the same SA operation. Nature's Choice covers wholefood pantry staples (nuts, seeds, dried fruit, salts, sweeteners, superfood powders). Nature's Nutrition is the targeted superfood drink range, principally Active Greens. Same factory, same standards, different ranges.
Are Nature's Choice products organic?
Some products are organic-certified and labelled as such (look for the certification mark on individual products). The broader range is positioned as natural and additive-free rather than certified organic. Where organic certification exists for a specific product, the label states the certifying body.
Why are these products cheaper than other health-food brands?
Two reasons. First, scale: Nature's Choice is one of the larger SA wholefood operations and buys raw materials in volumes that smaller brands cannot. Second, positioning: the brand never set out to be a boutique wellness label. The pricing strategy from 1985 onward has been to keep wholefoods accessible to weekly grocery shoppers, not special-occasion purchasers.
Is the Himalayan salt actually from the Himalayas?
Yes, mined from the Khewra salt mine region in Pakistan, which is the source of all genuine Himalayan pink salt globally. Nature's Choice imports the unrefined crystals and packages them in South Africa. The packaging is local, the salt itself is the same source as any reputable Himalayan salt brand.
What is xylitol and is it safe?
Xylitol is a naturally occurring sugar alcohol, here derived from birch. It has a low glycaemic index (so safe for diabetics and keto diets), contains 40 percent fewer calories than sugar, and is the only sweetener clinically shown to reduce dental cavities. Important warning: xylitol is highly toxic to dogs. If you have dogs in the house, store it where they cannot reach.
Can I cook with activated charcoal?
Yes in small amounts, but with caveats. Activated charcoal is sometimes used in culinary applications (black ice cream, detox smoothies) for colour and texture, but it can bind to medications and nutrients in the gut. Do not take activated charcoal within two hours of any prescription medication or vitamin supplement. For digestive upset use it is taken in larger doses, but as a culinary ingredient, small amounts are fine.
