The story

Clipper was started in 1984 by Mike and Lorraine Brehme from their kitchen in Beaminster, Dorset, with two chests of Assam tea bought for fifty pounds. They had worked in the tea trade and were appalled by the child labour and exploitation built into the conventional supply chain. Clipper was their answer: a tea company that paid growers fairly before there was a label to certify it.

In 1994, Clipper became one of the first three companies in the UK to carry the Fairtrade mark. Today it is the world's largest Fairtrade tea brand, supporting more than 114,000 producers across estates in Assam, Sri Lanka, and East Africa. The teabags themselves are unbleached, non-GMO, plant-based, and fully biodegradable, an industry first that took years to engineer. The thing that has not changed since 1984 is the brief: source ethically, blend properly, package without plastic.
We started Clipper because we knew where the tea we were drinking came from, and we did not want to be part of that anymore. Pay growers properly, blend well, and the rest sorts itself out.

About this brand

Common questions customers ask about the brand and its products.

What does Fairtrade actually pay for?
Two things. A minimum price floor that protects growers when the commodity market crashes, and a Fairtrade premium paid on top, which the producer cooperative decides how to spend. Common uses are schools, clinics, clean water infrastructure, and farm improvements. Clipper has been Fairtrade since 1994 and is the world's largest Fairtrade tea brand by volume.
Are Clipper teabags really plastic-free?
Yes. Most teabags contain polypropylene in the seal, which is why they do not compost properly. Clipper engineered the first plant-based, non-GMO, unbleached teabag with no plastic seal. It is fully biodegradable in home compost. The outer packet is recyclable.
What does 'organic' mean for tea specifically?
It means the estate grows tea without synthetic pesticides, herbicides, or chemical fertilisers. For tea, where you steep the dried leaf directly in your cup, this matters more than for some other crops because there is no peel to remove. Clipper's organic range is Soil Association certified, audited annually.
Is Snore and Peace safe to drink every night?
Yes for most adults. The blend contains chamomile, valerian, lavender, and lemon balm in food-grade quantities. Valerian can cause drowsiness, so do not drive after drinking it. If you are pregnant, breastfeeding, or taking sleep or anxiety medication, check with your doctor before starting a daily habit.
Does Clipper black tea contain caffeine?
Yes. Standard Clipper black teas (Indian Chai, Everyday, Earl Grey) contain caffeine at typical tea levels, roughly 40 to 50mg per cup. The herbal range (Snore and Peace, Lemon and Ginger, Mighty Mint, Detox, Orange and Turmeric) is naturally caffeine-free.
How do I store Clipper tea to keep it fresh?
Keep the inner packet sealed when not in use, store in a cool dry cupboard away from light and strong smells (spices, coffee). Tea picks up odours fast. The biodegradable teabags themselves stay fresh for the printed best-before date, usually 18 to 24 months from blending.
Where is Clipper tea blended?
In Beaminster, Dorset, the same town where Mike and Lorraine Brehme founded the company in 1984. Tea is sourced from organic and Fairtrade estates in Assam, Sri Lanka, and East Africa, then blended in Dorset.
