The story

Kingfisher was founded in 1988 in Norfolk, UK, by Richard Austin, who had worked in the organic food industry since the 1970s and had also founded Rainbow Wholefoods, the long-standing Norwich-based natural food cooperative. The premise behind Kingfisher was that the natural products market had toothpaste alternatives that were either ineffective or aesthetically unappealing, and there was room for a natural toothpaste that performed clinically as well as a conventional one.

Kingfisher became the first natural toothpaste in the world to receive approval from the British Dental Health Foundation, an endorsement that required clinical testing of cleaning effectiveness, not just ingredient safety. The formulations use real ingredients: real fennel, real strawberries for the children's variant, real peppermint, with no artificial colourings, flavourings, sweeteners, or preservatives. Both fluoride and fluoride-free variants are produced, which is unusual in the natural category and reflects the brand's clinical (rather than ideological) approach. Nearly four decades in, Kingfisher remains family-spirited, Norfolk-based, and approved by the UK Oral Health Foundation.
Natural does not have to mean ineffective. We worked with the British Dental Health Foundation because we wanted a natural toothpaste that cleaned teeth as well as the conventional ones, not one that just felt virtuous.
Richard Austin, Founder, Kingfisher Natural Toothpaste

What makes them different

  • 01

    BDHF Approved

The first natural toothpaste to be approved by the British Dental Health Foundation (now Oral Health Foundation). Approval requires demonstrated cleaning effectiveness, not just ingredient safety. Approval has been maintained continuously since 1988.

  • 02

    Real Ingredients

Real fennel in the Fennel formula, real strawberries in the children's Strawberry variant, real peppermint in the Mint. No artificial colourings, flavourings, sweeteners, or preservatives. The flavours are food-grade, not lab-mixed mint and bubblegum.

  • 03

    Vegan & Cruelty-Free

100 percent vegan-friendly ingredients across the toothpaste range. No animal testing at any stage. The cruelty-free position predates the EU cosmetics testing ban, going back to the founder's 1970s organic background.

  • 04

    UK Family Business

Founded in 1988 in Norfolk and still operating from Norfolk. The brand has remained independent through the consolidation wave in the natural products category, where most heritage brands have been acquired by multinationals.

About this brand

Common questions customers ask about the brand and its products.

Why fluoride-free?
Fluoride is the most effective single ingredient for preventing cavities, but some users prefer to avoid it for personal or family reasons (concerns about overexposure from water supply, swallowing risk in young children, or general preference for minimal ingredients). Kingfisher produces both fluoride and fluoride-free variants and lets the user choose. The fluoride-free variants are still BDHF-approved for cleaning effectiveness; the trade-off is the loss of fluoride-specific cavity protection.
Is the children's toothpaste safe if swallowed?
Yes. The children's Strawberry variant is fluoride-free and formulated with real strawberry rather than artificial sweetener, which means small swallowed amounts are not a safety concern. Children should still be supervised brushing until they can reliably spit, but the formulation accounts for the swallow risk that drives most paediatric dental safety discussions.
What does BDHF approval mean?
The British Dental Health Foundation (now the Oral Health Foundation) is the UK's principal independent oral health charity. Their approval scheme requires clinical evidence of cleaning effectiveness, ingredient safety, and product claims, audited independently. Kingfisher was the first natural toothpaste to achieve approval, and the certification has been continuously maintained.
Why does the Fennel one taste like liquorice?
Because it is made with real fennel, which has a natural anise/liquorice flavour profile. The Fennel variant is the closest Kingfisher product to traditional herbal toothpaste flavours. Users either love it or strongly prefer the Mint; there is rarely a middle ground.
Is it safe during pregnancy?
Yes. All Kingfisher variants are safe to use during pregnancy. The fluoride-free options may suit users who prefer to minimise total fluoride exposure during pregnancy, but the fluoride variants are also pregnancy-safe at normal brushing doses.
How long does a 100ml tube last?
For a single adult brushing twice daily with a normal pea-sized amount, roughly 2 to 3 months. The exact figure depends on how generous you are with the squeeze. Kingfisher's 100ml format matches most conventional toothpaste tubes in volume.
Where is Kingfisher made?
In Norfolk, UK. The brand has been Norfolk-based since 1988, with Richard Austin as the founder. The business remains independent, which is unusual for natural products brands that have been on the market this long.
