The story

Rawbiotics is the South African leader in live, liquid, non-freeze-dried probiotics. The brand launched in 2017 under the South African parent company Efficient Microbes (established 2006), built on a microbial-technology platform originally developed in the United States in 1998. The cultures are fermented at body temperature for 21 days, then bottled as a live liquid that does not require refrigeration. Every dose contains active, metabolically engaged bacteria, not the dormant freeze-dried powders that dominate the capsule probiotic market.

The argument for liquid over capsule is straightforward. Freeze-dried probiotics lose viable count from the moment they leave the manufacturing line. By the time a capsule reaches a Johannesburg shelf, the actual colony-forming unit count often falls well below the label claim. Live liquid probiotics, fermented and bottled at the same temperature the gut runs at, arrive metabolically active. They also carry the postbiotic compounds (organic acids, B vitamins, short-chain fatty acid precursors) produced during fermentation, which freeze-drying destroys. Rawbiotics extends the format into four named formulas: Daily, Gut Correct, Defence, and Kids.
A freeze-dried probiotic is a bag of sleeping bacteria. By the time they wake up in your gut, most of them are dead. We bottle ours awake.

What makes them different

  • 01

    21-Day Fermentation

Each batch is fermented at body temperature for 21 days before bottling. This allows the cultures to fully colonise the medium and produce the postbiotic compounds (organic acids, B vitamins) that come with live fermentation. Capsule probiotics skip this step.

  • 02

    Live and Liquid

The bacteria are alive and metabolically active when bottled. No freeze-drying, no dormancy phase, no shelf-life CFU collapse. The label claim and the bottle contents match.

  • 03

    No Refrigeration

The fermentation medium is acid-stable enough that the bottle does not require refrigeration. It can travel, sit in a cupboard, and be dosed without cold-chain logistics, useful in South African summers where probiotic capsules degrade fast.

  • 04

    Multi-Strain Profile

Twelve plus strains across Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Bacillus, Streptococcus, Lactococcus, and Saccharomyces. Broader diversity than most single-strain capsule probiotics.

What the brand stands behind

  • 21-Day Fermentation

Each batch is fermented at body temperature for 21 days, allowing full colonisation and postbiotic generation before bottling.

  • Live Cultures

Bacteria are metabolically active when bottled, not freeze-dried. The CFU count on the label is the count in the bottle.

  • South African Made

Manufactured by Efficient Microbes (Pty) Ltd in South Africa using microbial-technology licensed from the original US development team.

  • No Refrigeration Required

The acid-stable medium keeps the cultures viable at room temperature, useful in the South African climate and for travel.

  • Multi-Strain

Twelve plus strains across six genera (Lactobacillus, Bifidobacterium, Bacillus, Streptococcus, Lactococcus, Saccharomyces).

  • Vegan and Gluten-Free

The fermentation substrate is plant-based and gluten-free. The full Rawbiotics range is suitable for vegan and gluten-sensitive consumers.

About this brand

Common questions customers ask about the brand and its products.

How do I take Rawbiotics?
Adults: 30ml per day, ideally in the morning on an empty stomach or 30 minutes before food. Children (Kids formula): 5ml to 15ml depending on age. Shake gently, measure with the cap, drink straight or mixed with a small amount of cold water or juice. Do not mix with hot drinks, heat kills the cultures.
Why does it not need refrigeration?
The fermentation produces enough organic acids (lactic, acetic) that the medium becomes acid-stable. The cultures remain viable for up to two years sealed and three months once opened, at room temperature. This is what makes Rawbiotics practical in the South African market, where supply chains and home storage rarely deliver true cold-chain conditions for capsule probiotics.
How does liquid compare to capsule probiotics?
Capsule probiotics are freeze-dried, which preserves shelf life but pauses metabolic activity and significantly reduces viable count between manufacture and consumption. Liquid probiotics arrive metabolically active and include postbiotic compounds produced during fermentation. The trade-off is liquid has a heavier daily-use logistics (shake, measure, taste) while capsules are quicker. For sensitive guts or post-antibiotic recovery, liquid is usually the better choice.
Is it safe alongside antibiotics?
Yes, with timing. Take Rawbiotics at least two hours apart from antibiotic doses to avoid the antibiotic killing the probiotic. Continuing through and after the antibiotic course (for two to three weeks post-completion) is the protocol to repopulate the gut.
Why is the taste so sour or vinegary?
That is the lactic and acetic acid produced during the 21-day ferment. It is the same flavour profile as kombucha, kefir, or sauerkraut brine. The taste is a sign the fermentation is real. Chilling the bottle and mixing with apple juice or a few drops of fruit concentrate makes it more palatable if needed.
Can pregnant women take Rawbiotics?
Yes. Live probiotics are generally regarded as safe in pregnancy, and many practitioners specifically recommend them in late-stage pregnancy to support the infant's microbiome at delivery. Stick to the Daily formula rather than Defence (which contains immune-stimulating botanicals best avoided in pregnancy). Confirm with your practitioner.
How long until I notice a difference?
Gut and bowel changes (improved regularity, less bloating) often show inside two to three weeks. Broader effects on energy, immune resilience, and skin take longer, typically six to twelve weeks. Probiotic effects are cumulative; consistency matters more than dose.
