The story

BetterYou was founded in 2006 by Andrew Thomas, an asthma sufferer who met biochemist Juan Rossello in a bar and ended up co-developing the first commercial transdermal magnesium product. The premise was simple: many people do not absorb supplements well from tablets, and some (like Thomas) wanted to reduce reliance on steroid-based inhalers. Applying magnesium chloride directly to the skin or spraying nutrients into the mouth bypasses the digestive bottleneck entirely.

Working with Dr Charles Heard's pharmacy research team at Cardiff University, BetterYou developed oral spray delivery for vitamins B12, D, K2, and multivitamin formulas. The Magnesium Oil body spray became the brand's most-copied product worldwide. Operating out of Barnsley, Yorkshire, the company received the Queen's Award for Enterprise, the UK's highest industrial honour. The range is now distributed in 50-plus countries and remains the reference point for pill-free supplementation.

If a supplement can be delivered transdermally or orally as a spray, it should be. Swallowing tablets is the worst-absorbed and least-pleasant way to take nutrients.

Do oral sprays actually absorb better than tablets?

For certain nutrients, yes. B12, D3, and K2 absorb well via the oral mucosa, which is why sublingual B12 has been a standard medical format for decades. For minerals like iron or calcium, the difference is less clear. Cardiff University research backs the oral spray delivery for vitamins. For most users, the bigger benefit is compliance: you actually take the spray each day, where tablets get forgotten.

How does transdermal magnesium work?

Magnesium chloride applied to the skin penetrates the dermis through hair follicles and sweat ducts, and is absorbed into the underlying tissue and circulation. The absorption is slower and lower than IV magnesium, but it bypasses the loose-stool side effect that limits how much oral magnesium most people can tolerate. Best applied to thinner-skinned areas (inner arms, legs, abdomen).

Will magnesium oil sting?

On dry skin or freshly shaved skin, yes, mild stinging is common for the first few applications. This usually stops within a week of regular use as the skin adapts. If it persists, dilute the spray 50/50 with water for the first two weeks, or apply on damp skin after a shower.

Are these products suitable for children?

Yes, BetterYou makes specific kids formulations of the oral sprays (Multivitamin Junior, D3 Junior). Magnesium flakes in a bath are also suitable for children, in lower concentrations (roughly half the adult dose). The Magnesium Oil body spray on undiluted skin can sting children more than adults, so dilute or use the flake bath instead.

How many sprays equal one tablet?

Each spray delivers a measured dose. The Multivitamin is four sprays per day for the full daily dose. B12 Boost is also four sprays for 1,200mcg. D3 1000 is one spray for 1,000IU. Check the label of each product for spray-to-dose mapping. The bottles last 30 to 32 days at standard use.

Can I use these products during pregnancy?

BetterYou makes specific pregnancy-suitable oral sprays, and the magnesium products are generally considered safe during pregnancy. Some formulas (like the D3 with K2 combo) need clearance from your obstetrician because high-dose K2 has not been studied extensively in pregnancy. Read the label, and ask your doctor for any product containing more than the daily reference intake.
