The story

The Kindbrush was founded by an oral hygienist from Cape Town who wanted a clean, sustainable alternative to plastic toothbrushes that she could recommend to her patients without compromise. The category was crowded with bamboo brushes that looked sustainable but felt cheap and brushed poorly. Kindbrush's contribution was to insist on dental-quality bristle action and ergonomics first, then build the sustainable materials around that performance baseline.

The range is narrow on purpose: adult and kids bamboo toothbrushes, plus a refillable floss-in-a-glass-bottle system that eliminates the small plastic floss containers that pile up in bathroom bins. The bamboo handle is biodegradable, the bristles are recyclable nylon, the packaging is plastic-free, and the dental hygienist origin shows in the brush head geometry and bristle softness. The brand is endorsed by dental professionals across South Africa and is designed for families who want to make the swap from plastic without giving up clinical brushing quality.
I would not give my patients a tool I could not stand behind clinically. The bamboo is the easy part. Getting the bristle action right took the work.

What makes them different

  • 01

    Hygienist-Founded

Designed by a practising oral hygienist from Cape Town. The brush head geometry and bristle softness reflect clinical brushing recommendations, not just sustainable packaging optimisation.

  • 02

    Biodegradable Bamboo

The handle is sustainably grown bamboo, biodegradable and compostable once the bristles are removed. Bamboo is naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, which is part of why it works as a toothbrush material in damp bathroom environments.

  • 03

    Refillable Floss System

Floss-in-a-bottle is the brand's solution to the plastic-floss-container problem. The glass bottle holds the floss; refills slot in without adding new plastic. One bottle, ongoing refills, no landfill waste.

  • 04

    Family Range

Adult and kids' toothbrushes share the same construction at appropriate sizes. The whole family can swap to plastic-free brushing without buying two different brand systems for adults and children.

Kids bamboo toothbrush

The kids' brush is often the easiest first swap. Children take to bamboo without complaint, and the softer bristles suit developing gums.

About this brand

Common questions customers ask about the brand and its products.

Are the bristles compostable too?
No. The bristles are nylon and need to be removed before the bamboo handle goes to compost. Snap or pull the bristles out with pliers, recycle the nylon if your local stream accepts it, and the bamboo handle composts in 6 to 12 months in a hot compost or buried in garden soil.
How long does a Kindbrush last?
Replace every 3 months, the same as any toothbrush. The bamboo is durable enough to last longer mechanically, but dental hygiene standards recommend a fresh brush every 3 months regardless of material because of bristle wear.
Does the bamboo go mouldy in a damp bathroom?
Bamboo is naturally anti-bacterial and anti-fungal, which gives it a head start. Air-dry the brush after use (not flat on a wet counter), and the handle stays clean for the full 3-month replacement cycle. Mould issues are usually a storage problem, not a material problem.
Are the kids' toothbrushes soft enough for young children?
Yes. The kids' brush uses softer bristles and a smaller head appropriate for children's mouths and developing gums. The hygienist origin of the brand means the bristle stiffness was calibrated to clinical recommendations rather than copied from generic bamboo manufacturers.
How does the floss-in-a-bottle system work?
Buy the glass bottle with floss once. When the floss runs out, buy a refill spool and slot it into the existing bottle. The bottle is your permanent floss container; the refills are the only ongoing purchase. This eliminates the small plastic containers that come with each new floss purchase.
Is the floss vegan?
Yes. The floss material is plant-based and vegan, without the silk or beeswax used in some natural floss alternatives. The full Kindbrush range is vegan.
Where are the products made?
Designed in Cape Town, with bamboo sourced from sustainable bamboo farms (typically Asian sources, which is the standard for bamboo toothbrush production globally because bamboo grows fastest there). The brand discloses the supply chain on request.
