The story

Credé was founded in 1989 by Jutta and Helfried Credé, a German couple who emigrated to South Africa in the early 1980s with seven children and a conviction that there was a better way to make oil. They settled near Grahamstown, converted a defunct pineapple farm outside Bathurst into South Africa's first commercial jojoba plantation, and waited five years for the plants to produce their first crop. Desert Sun Jojoba Oil was the brand's first product.

The family business is now run by two of the Credé sons from a facility in Strand, Western Cape. The range has expanded to more than twenty cold-pressed oils plus the OhMega nut butter line, but the method has not changed. Cold-pressing means the seed or nut is mechanically crushed at low temperature so the oil retains its colour, aroma, and unsaturated fat profile. Heat-extracted and solvent-extracted oils are cheaper to produce and have a longer shelf life, but they lose the things that make the oil worth buying. Credé has stayed cold-pressed for thirty-five years because the alternative is not really the same product.
We pressed oil alongside our children's homework on weekends and during school holidays. Two of those children run the business now. The oils are still cold-pressed the same way.

What makes them different

  • 01

    Cold-Pressed Method

Oils are mechanically pressed at low temperature. No heat, no chemical solvents, no deodorising. The colour, aroma, and unsaturated fat profile of the original seed or nut are preserved.

  • 02

    Second-Generation Family

Founded by Jutta and Helfried Credé in 1989. Now run by two of their sons from Strand, Western Cape. Thirty-five years of pressing experience in the same family.

  • 03

    South African Jojoba Pioneers

Credé planted South Africa's first commercial jojoba plantation outside Bathurst in 1984. Desert Sun Jojoba Oil was the founding product and is still in the range.

About this brand

Common questions customers ask about the brand and its products.

What does cold-pressed actually mean?
The seed or nut is mechanically crushed at a temperature low enough to preserve the natural fat profile, colour, and aroma of the oil. Commercial extraction usually uses heat (which oxidises the unsaturated fats) or chemical solvents like hexane (which leaves residue). Cold-pressed yields less oil per kilogram of seed, so the product is more expensive, but you keep the things that make the oil worth using.
Is Crede's castor oil safe to use on hair and eyelashes?
Yes. The organic certification matters here because castor oil is highly penetrating, so anything in the bottle ends up on the scalp or near the eye. Cold-pressed organic castor is the safest version of this ingredient. Apply with a clean wand or cotton swab, leave overnight, wash out in the morning. Patch test before regular use.
How long do cold-pressed oils last?
Unopened, most cold-pressed oils stay fresh for 12 to 18 months. Once opened, refrigerate culinary oils (olive, coconut, almond) and use within 6 months. Topical oils (castor, jojoba) are more stable and can sit in a cool cupboard for up to a year. Black cumin and rosehip oxidise faster and should be used within 3 months of opening.
Can I cook with all the Crede oils?
No. Smoke point matters. Olive oil and coconut oil tolerate medium heat (up to 180C). Almond, jojoba, and sweet almond oils should not be heated and are for salad dressings, finishing, or topical use only. Black cumin oil is taken cold by the teaspoon, never cooked.
How does Crede coconut oil compare to other brands?
It is cold-pressed from fresh coconut meat (wet milling) rather than dried copra. The aroma is sweet and clean rather than smoky or solvent-tinged, which is the giveaway for copra-derived coconut oil. The fat profile is the same, but the sensory quality is genuinely different.
What is black cumin oil good for?
Nigella sativa has documented immune and anti-inflammatory effects in clinical literature. People take a teaspoon daily for asthma, allergies, joint discomfort, or as a general immune support during cold and flu season. The taste is bitter and peppery. Topically it is used on eczema and inflammatory skin.
Where are Crede products made?
At Crede's facility in Strand, Western Cape, South Africa. Cold-pressing, bottling, and labelling all happen on-site. The jojoba is grown on the original family plantation near Bathurst.
