The story

Medi Mushrooms has spent the last decade educating South African practitioners, health shops, and customers on what functional mushrooms can and cannot do. They were one of the first SA brands to take medicinal mushrooms seriously as a clinical category rather than a wellness trend, and that long-form education work is reflected in the formulation choices.

The brand's technical position is specific: extracts are made from the fruiting body (the cap and stalk) rather than mycelium grown on grain, and the extraction is hot water rather than alcohol or ambient grind. This matters because the bioactive beta-glucans that drive immune and cognitive effects are concentrated in the fruiting body and require hot water to release in usable form. Capsules are vegan, contain no fillers, no GMOs, no grain, no sugar, no gluten, and are both Kosher and Halaal certified. The product range covers Lion's Mane, Reishi, Cordyceps, Shiitake, Maitake, and Turkey Tail.
Mycelium on grain is not the same as a fruiting body extract. The compounds are different, the beta-glucan content is different, and the clinical effect is different. We extract what actually works.

What makes them different

  • 01

    Fruiting Body Only

Extracts use the mushroom cap and stalk, not mycelium grown on a grain substrate. This is the form of the mushroom with the highest concentration of bioactive beta-glucans and triterpenes.

  • 02

    Hot Water Extraction

Beta-glucans require hot water to extract in usable form. Cold processing or simple grinding leaves most of the active compounds locked inside indigestible chitin.

  • 03

    Clean Capsule

Vegan capsules, no fillers, no GMOs, grain free, sugar free, gluten free, Kosher and Halaal certified. The mushroom extract is the only thing in the capsule.

  • 04

    Practitioner Education

Ten years of work training South African practitioners and retailers on functional mushroom use. The brand sits in clinics and dispensaries, not just lifestyle shelves.

About this brand

Common questions customers ask about the brand and its products.

What is the difference between fruiting body and mycelium mushroom products?
The fruiting body is the actual mushroom (cap and stalk) and contains the highest concentration of beta-glucans and triterpenes, the compounds responsible for the clinical effects. Mycelium products are typically grown on grain and harvested before the mushroom fruits, which means the final powder contains a large percentage of grain residue and a small percentage of mycelium. Medi Mushrooms uses fruiting body extracts only.
Why does hot water extraction matter?
Beta-glucans are locked inside chitin, the structural material of mushroom cell walls. The human gut cannot break chitin down efficiently, so simply grinding the mushroom into a powder leaves most of the active compounds inaccessible. Hot water extraction ruptures the chitin and pulls the beta-glucans into solution, where they can be concentrated and encapsulated in a bioavailable form.
How long until I notice an effect from Lion's Mane?
Most users report subtle cognitive shifts (sharper focus, improved word recall, less mental fog) within two to four weeks of daily use. The mechanism (Nerve Growth Factor stimulation) is a slow build, not a stimulant effect. If you are expecting same-day results, you will be disappointed; if you are willing to take it daily for a month, the cumulative effect is usually noticeable.
Can I take multiple mushroom extracts together?
Yes. Functional mushrooms are generally well tolerated in combination and are often stacked (Lion's Mane plus Reishi, or Cordyceps plus Lion's Mane, are common pairings). There are no known antagonistic interactions across the range.
Are these safe in pregnancy?
There is insufficient research on functional mushroom extracts in pregnancy and breastfeeding to make a confident recommendation. Most practitioners advise pausing functional mushroom supplementation during pregnancy. Speak to your healthcare provider before starting or continuing.
What is Medi Mushrooms' relationship to mainstream medicine?
The brand sits in the complementary medicine space and is sold through practitioners, pharmacies, and health retailers. Functional mushrooms are an adjunct, not a substitute, for conventional treatment of serious conditions. The clinical research base is strongest for cognitive support (Lion's Mane), immune modulation (Reishi, Turkey Tail), and stamina (Cordyceps).
