Kids-Health

Small bodies, different rules. Kids need their own protocol.

Children are not small adults. Their livers metabolise differently, their dosing is weight-based, and their developing brains and immune systems have unique needs. Adult supplements at adult doses can harm them. The single most important rule of paediatric supplementation is: use products formulated and dosed for the right age.

Day to day, the priorities are omega 3 (DHA for the brain, EPA for inflammation), vitamin D (low in nearly every SA child without daily sun), and a healthy gut microbiome (the foundation of immune function). Acute support during illness, school terms, and travel comes from kid-specific herbal products. When in doubt, your paediatrician comes first.

What is actually happening

  • Brains Grow On Fat

The brain is roughly 60 percent fat, much of it DHA. Children making language, focus, and motor connections need a steady DHA supply, especially under age 6 and during teen years.

  • The Immune System Is Still Learning

Young children average 6 to 10 infections a year while their immune system is training. Vitamin D, zinc, and a healthy gut shorten and soften this, they do not (and should not) eliminate it.

  • Gut Sets The Foundation

Up to 70 percent of immune cells live in the gut. Antibiotics, refined sugar, and stress hit kids' microbiomes hard. A kid-specific probiotic helps rebuild it.

  • Adult Doses Hurt Kids

A capsule sized for a 70 kg adult is the wrong dose for a 15 kg child. Liver enzymes mature gradually until adolescence. Always use products labelled for the right age and weight.

How we think about it

STEP 1

Foundation, daily

A kids' omega 3 with DHA, plus vitamin D in winter or year-round if outdoor time is limited. This is the baseline for nearly every child over 12 months.

STEP 2

Build the gut

A children's probiotic during and after antibiotics, after a stomach bug, or as a 3-month course if your child is prone to constipation, eczema, or frequent infections.

STEP 3

Acute, when bugs hit

Age-appropriate herbal remedies like Paraherb Kiddies or A Vogel sore throat spray for the early symptoms of colds, flu, and throat irritation. Short-term, not daily.

Common questions

At what age can I start supplements?
For breastfed babies, vitamin D from birth is standard advice (check with your paediatrician on dose). DHA can usually start from 6 months on an age-appropriate liquid. For anything else, ask your paediatrician, especially under age 2.
Can I give my child my adult vitamin if I just halve the dose?
No. Adult formulas often contain doses, forms, and added ingredients (caffeine, herbs, sweeteners) that are not safe for children regardless of how much you split the capsule. Always use a kid-labelled product.
My child eats well. Do they still need supplements?
If they get oily fish twice a week, daily fruit and veg, and enough outdoor time for vitamin D, they may need very little. Most South African kids fall short on vitamin D in winter and DHA year-round. Build from there, don't blanket-supplement.
How long should my child take a probiotic for?
At least 4 to 8 weeks for a noticeable change to gut and immune patterns. After antibiotics, run it for 2 to 4 weeks at minimum. Long-term daily use can be appropriate but is a conversation with your paediatrician.
What should I never give a young child?
Honey under age 1 (botulism risk), adult-dose herbal tinctures, essential oils internally, high-dose vitamin A, weight-loss products, anything with added caffeine or stimulants, and any 'detox' or 'cleanse' product. When unsure, do not.
My child has fever for 3 days. What do I do?
See your paediatrician or GP, not a supplement aisle. Persistent fever, fever in babies under 3 months, refusal to drink, breathing difficulty, drowsiness, a rash that doesn't fade under pressure, or convulsions are medical, not supplemental, situations.
