Homeopathy is a medical tradition that dates to the late 1700s. It uses heavily-diluted preparations of plant, mineral, and animal sources to support the body's own response to symptoms. The remedies are gentle, the dosing is small, and the practice has a long history in South Africa where homeopaths are statutorily registered healthcare practitioners (AHPCSA).

What is actually happening

  • The like-cures-like principle

    Homeopathy is built on the idea that a substance that causes specific symptoms in a healthy person can, in dilute form, help the body respond to those same symptoms when ill. Coffea (coffee) preparations for restlessness, Apis (bee) for stings and swelling.

  • Dilution and succussion

    Remedies are prepared by serial dilution with vigorous shaking (succussion) at each step. The result is a preparation with very low material concentration, which is why side effects and interactions are minimal compared with conventional medicines.

  • Support, not replacement

    Homeopathy works best as part of a broader picture: rest, nutrition, and conventional care when conditions warrant it. It is not a substitute for antibiotics in serious infection, insulin in diabetes, or emergency care.

  • Common potencies explained

    You will see 6C, 30C, and 200C on packaging. The number is dilution steps; C means a 1:100 dilution at each step. 6C and 30C are common household potencies. Higher potencies (200C, 1M) are typically used with a practitioner.

Is homeopathy regulated in South Africa?
Yes. Homeopaths in South Africa register with the Allied Health Professions Council (AHPCSA) and complete a five-year Master's-level qualification. The remedies themselves are sold over the counter at low potencies and through practitioners at higher potencies.
How do I take a remedy?
Most household remedies come as small pillules or liquid drops, taken under the tongue and left to dissolve. Avoid eating, drinking, brushing teeth, or strong flavours (mint, coffee) for about 15 minutes either side. Frequency depends on the situation, usually every 15 minutes to 4 hours for acute use, then taper as symptoms ease.
Can homeopathy interact with my prescription medicine?
Direct biochemical interactions are extremely rare because the material dose is so low. That said, always tell your doctor and pharmacist what you are taking. Strong-tasting flavours and stimulants can interfere with how the remedy is absorbed.
Is it safe in pregnancy and for babies?
