What is actually happening

What you put on skin enters the bloodstream
Transdermal absorption is real, especially for lipid-soluble compounds. The skin is not a sealed barrier. Anything you apply that contains parabens, phthalates, or synthetic fragrance gets a measurable dose into circulation.
Daily exposure compounds over decades
A single application of a low-tox lotion is not the issue. The issue is twice-daily use across deodorant, moisturiser, sunscreen, soap, and lip balm, every day, for forty years. Low individual doses multiplied by frequency add up.
Synthetic fragrance is endocrine-disrupting
The word fragrance or parfum on a label can hide dozens of undisclosed compounds, including phthalates linked to hormone disruption. Real botanical scent comes from listed essential oils, not a single mystery word.
Choose the version your grandmother would recognise
Olive oil, beeswax, shea butter, castor oil, zinc oxide. These were body care for centuries before petroleum-derived emulsifiers arrived. Familiar ingredients tend to be the safer ones.

Common questions

Is castile soap really gentle enough for daily body use?

Yes. Dr Bronner is a saponified blend of olive, coconut, and palm oils with no synthetic surfactants. It cleans well without stripping the skin barrier, and dilutes nicely for face, body, or hair use.

What is a castor oil pack and why do people use them?

A flannel soaked in castor oil, placed over the right upper abdomen with gentle warmth, traditionally used to support liver and lymphatic drainage. Practitioners in the Gerson and naturopathic traditions still use them. Try two or three evenings a week for an hour.

Why mineral sunscreen rather than chemical?

Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide sit on top of the skin and reflect UV. Chemical filters like oxybenzone absorb into the bloodstream and have been measured in plasma after a single application. Mineral options also remain reef-safe.

How do I know if a fragrance is natural or synthetic?

Read the ingredient list. Natural scent will be listed as specific essential oils such as lavandula angustifolia oil or citrus aurantium. Synthetic scent appears as the single word fragrance or parfum and can legally hide dozens of undisclosed compounds.

Can I use these products if I have sensitive skin?

Most. Start with the unscented versions, patch test on the inner forearm for 24 hours, and avoid essential oil heavy products if you have reactive skin. Dr Bronner unscented castile and pure castor oil are usually well tolerated.

Are these safe in pregnancy?

The pure castile soaps, plain castor oil, and mineral sunscreens are generally considered safe in pregnancy. Avoid concentrated essential oil products in the first trimester and check with your midwife or doctor on anything you are unsure about.
