Detoxification

Your liver detoxes you 24/7. Your job is to support it, not replace it.

Detox is not a 30-day juice cleanse. It is the work your liver, kidneys, gut, lungs, and skin do every minute of every day to neutralise and clear out metabolic waste, environmental toxins, hormones, alcohol, and medications. When people feel sluggish, bloated, or foggy, the issue is usually not that they need a hard reset. It is that one of those clearance systems is overloaded or under-resourced.

Real detox support means giving your liver the nutrients it needs for Phase I and Phase II pathways (B vitamins, glutathione precursors, sulforaphane), keeping your gut moving so bile-bound toxins actually leave (fibre, probiotics), and reducing the input where you can (alcohol, processed food, excess medication). A targeted 2 to 4 week support phase can help after illness, holidays, or course of antibiotics. Be sceptical of any product that promises a full-body cleanse in 7 days.

What is actually happening

  • Phase I And Phase II Liver

Your liver detoxifies in two steps. Phase I (cytochrome P450 enzymes) breaks compounds down, often into reactive intermediates. Phase II conjugates them with glutathione, sulphate, or glycine so they can leave safely. Both phases need specific nutrient cofactors to work.

  • Glutathione And Antioxidants

Glutathione is the master detoxifier inside liver cells. It neutralises reactive intermediates from Phase I before they cause damage. Sulforaphane (from broccoli sprouts) and NAC are the most evidence-backed ways to lift glutathione production.

  • Gut Clearance

Once the liver packages toxins into bile and dumps them into the gut, you need to actually pass them out. Sluggish bowels mean reabsorption. Probiotics, fibre, and chlorophyll keep transit time tight and the gut microbiome doing its share of metabolite clearance.

  • Binding And Absorption

For acute exposures (food poisoning, contaminated water, gut-derived endotoxins), activated charcoal and zeolite physically bind compounds in the gut so they cannot be absorbed. These are useful tools for the moment, not for daily long-term use.

How we think about it

STEP 1

Foundation: support the liver

A liver cleanse formula daily for 2 to 4 weeks after a high-load period (festive season, antibiotics, illness, alcohol-heavy stretch). Supplies the cofactors your liver needs to clear what is already in the queue.

STEP 2

Build: keep the gut moving

Add a quality probiotic to support gut microbial diversity, plus fibre and chlorophyll for transit and bile flow. This is what makes liver work actually leave your body rather than recirculate.

STEP 3

Acute: bind on demand

Keep activated charcoal or zeolite on hand for food poisoning, hangover prevention, or suspected contaminated meals. Take well away from food and medication, as binders are non-selective.

Common questions

Do I actually need to detox?
Your liver detoxes you every second of every day. You do not need to detox in the way pop culture means it. What you can do is support the system after periods of high load (festive eating, alcohol, antibiotics, illness) with a 2 to 4 week targeted phase. Year-round aggressive cleansing is not helpful and can be counterproductive.
How often should I do a liver cleanse?
Two to four times a year is plenty for most people: after the festive season, after a course of antibiotics, after a period of high alcohol intake, or seasonally. Daily forever is unnecessary and may interfere with normal liver function.
What is the difference between liver support and a parasite cleanse?
Liver support gives your liver the nutrients to do its existing work better. A parasite cleanse uses anti-parasitic herbs (black walnut, cloves, wormwood) to target gut-resident parasites. These are different interventions for different goals. Do not run a parasite cleanse continuously.
Can I take activated charcoal or zeolite every day?
No. Binders are non-selective, meaning they bind nutrients and medications along with toxins. Use them for acute situations (food poisoning, suspect meal, hangover prevention) and always take 2 hours away from food, supplements, and prescription medication.
Will I feel worse before I feel better?
Some people experience mild headaches, fatigue, or skin breakouts in the first few days as the gut and liver clear. This usually settles within a week. If symptoms are severe or persistent, stop and reassess. Go slower next time.
Can I detox while pregnant or breastfeeding?
No. Mobilising toxins during pregnancy or breastfeeding can pass them to the baby. Stick to good nutrition, hydration, fibre, and gentle gut support. Save active cleansing protocols for after weaning.
What about chlorophyll, does it really do anything?
Liquid chlorophyll supports gut transit, has mild antioxidant activity, and helps reduce body odour from the inside. Useful as a gentle daily add-in during a clearance phase. Not a miracle, but a sensible supporting role.
