Pregnancy

The first 1000 days shape a lifetime. Get the basics right.

Pregnancy is a metabolic event. Folate demand jumps, blood volume rises 45 percent, and your baby builds an entire nervous system using nutrients drawn directly from your stores. Deficits get filled from your bones, blood, and brain before your baby goes without. That is why prenatal supplementation is not optional once you decide to try for a baby.

What you take matters as much as what you avoid. Some supplements safe outside pregnancy become risky during it. The list below is a starting point, not a prescription. Every prenatal protocol should be signed off by your obstetrician or midwife, especially if you have any pregnancy condition, take chronic medication, or are carrying multiples.

What is actually happening

  • Folate Builds The Neural Tube

The neural tube closes between days 21 and 28, often before you know you are pregnant. Adequate folate (ideally as methylfolate) cuts neural-tube defect risk significantly. Start before conception if possible.

  • DHA Builds The Brain

Roughly 70 percent of brain development happens in utero and the first two years. DHA, an omega 3 fatty acid, is the structural fat of the developing brain and retina. Maternal intake directly affects baby's levels.

  • Mineral Demand Climbs

Iron, calcium, magnesium, and iodine demand rises sharply. Shortfalls show up as fatigue, leg cramps, brittle hair, and (longer term) maternal bone loss and thyroid stress.

  • Not Everything Safe Is Safe Here

High-dose vitamin A (retinol), ashwagandha, certain essential oils, high-dose herbs, and some 'detox' products can harm the baby. Pregnancy-safe is a specific label, not a default.

How we think about it

STEP 1

Preconception, 3 months ahead

Start a quality prenatal multivitamin with methylfolate and a clean omega 3 with DHA. Get baseline bloods done: iron, ferritin, vitamin D, thyroid. Fix deficits before conception.

STEP 2

Through pregnancy, daily

Continue prenatal and omega 3 every day. Add magnesium if you have leg cramps or constipation. Adjust iron based on your bloods, with your doctor's guidance.

STEP 3

Last trimester and postpartum

Prepare for breastfeeding: omega 3 demand stays high, vitamin D for baby comes via breastmilk, and a postnatal kit covers recovery. Keep the prenatal going for 3 to 6 months after birth.

Common questions

When should I start a prenatal?
Ideally 3 months before trying to conceive. The neural tube closes very early in pregnancy, so folate needs to be in place before you know you're pregnant. If you are already pregnant, start today.
Which supplements are unsafe in pregnancy?
High-dose vitamin A (retinol, not beta-carotene), ashwagandha and most adaptogens, high-dose vitamin E, clary sage and many essential oils before labour, detox or cleansing products, and most herbal blends. When in doubt, do not take it without your obstetrician's sign-off.
Can I take my normal multivitamin instead of a prenatal?
No. Standard multivitamins often contain retinol-based vitamin A at doses that are unsafe in early pregnancy, and rarely have enough folate, iodine, or DHA. Switch to a dedicated prenatal.
Do I really need omega 3 if I eat fish?
Two portions of low-mercury oily fish a week is a good baseline. If you don't eat fish regularly, a clean fish or algae oil with at least 200 mg DHA per dose is the simplest way to hit pregnancy targets.
What about iron? My doctor said my levels are fine.
Then don't add extra. Iron supplementation outside of a confirmed need can cause constipation, oxidative stress, and (in some studies) worse outcomes. Iron should always be guided by ferritin and full blood count, not guessed at.
Can I keep taking my prenatal while breastfeeding?
Yes, and it's a good idea for at least 3 to 6 months postpartum. Your baby's vitamin D, DHA, and iodine still come largely from you. Many women stay on a prenatal for the full breastfeeding window.
What if I have hyperemesis or can't keep capsules down?
Speak to your obstetrician first. Transdermal magnesium, liquid or chewable prenatals, and ginger products can help. Some women only manage folate alone in the first trimester and that is better than nothing.
