Allergies

Itchy eyes, runny nose, blocked sinuses. It is your mast cells, not weakness.

Allergies are an over-reactive immune response to something harmless: pollen, dust, pet dander, mould. The trigger is the pollen, but the symptoms are caused by your own mast cells dumping histamine into tissue that did not need defending. Antihistamines block the receptor after the fact. Natural mast cell stabilisers stop the dump in the first place.

In South Africa, the worst window runs from August through November as Highveld grass pollen peaks, with a second wave in autumn from moulds and dust. If your symptoms are predictable by season, you can pre-load support 2 to 4 weeks before your usual flare and reduce how bad it gets. Supplements are one layer. Air filters, washing pollen out of hair at night, and identifying the trigger matter just as much.

What is actually happening

  • Mast Cell Stabilisation

Mast cells are the immune cells that release histamine when triggered. Quercetin stabilises their membranes so they release less when exposed to allergens. This is upstream of antihistamines, which only block the receptor.

  • Histamine And Inflammation

Histamine causes the visible symptoms: itchy eyes, runny nose, swelling, hives. But it is also part of a wider inflammatory cascade. Reducing the underlying inflammation (omega-3s, curcumin) reduces overall reactivity over time.

  • Sinus And Airways

Bromelain (from pineapple) thins mucus and reduces airway inflammation, useful when sinuses are blocked and breathing is restricted. Paired with quercetin, it covers both the immune trigger and the downstream congestion.

  • Gut-Immune Connection

Roughly 70 percent of your immune system sits in the gut. Imbalanced gut bacteria can amplify allergic responses. Probiotics and reduced food sensitivities often dial down seasonal allergies that seemed unrelated to diet.

How we think about it

STEP 1

Foundation: stabilise the mast cells

Quercetin daily, ideally starting 2 to 4 weeks before your usual flare season. This is the upstream lever. Combine with vitamin C, which extends quercetin's activity in the body.

STEP 2

Build: lower background inflammation

Add black cumin oil (Nigella sativa) for its broad anti-inflammatory and antihistamine effects, plus a sinus-targeted formula if congestion is your main symptom. Give it 4 to 6 weeks.

STEP 3

Acute: when you are flared

Bromelain helps clear blocked sinuses and reduce swelling. A sinus relief drop or spray for fast symptomatic relief. Saline rinses physically remove pollen from the nasal passages.

Common questions

How long until quercetin starts working?
Quercetin works cumulatively. Most people notice fewer or milder symptoms after 2 to 4 weeks. It is not an instant-relief option, which is why pre-loading before your allergy season matters.
Can I take quercetin with my antihistamine?
Yes. They work at different points in the histamine pathway: quercetin upstream (stabilising mast cells), antihistamines downstream (blocking receptors). Many people find they need less of their usual antihistamine after a few weeks on quercetin.
When is allergy season in South Africa?
Highveld grass pollen peaks August to November. Cape Town has earlier and longer cycles due to milder winters. Autumn brings mould spores. If your symptoms are predictable, plan support 2 to 4 weeks ahead.
Can children take these?
Quercetin at lower doses and homeopathic allergy formulas are generally suitable from school age. Avoid concentrated black cumin oil, high-dose bromelain, and complex blends in children under 12 without practitioner guidance.
What if I am on blood thinners?
Bromelain and quercetin can both mildly increase bleeding risk. If you are on warfarin, aspirin, or other anticoagulants, check with your doctor before starting. Generally fine at standard doses, but worth flagging.
Are food allergies different?
Yes. True food allergies (anaphylaxis risk) need medical management and an EpiPen, not supplements. Food sensitivities (bloating, fatigue, skin issues after certain foods) often improve with gut support and identifying triggers through elimination.
Will probiotics help my hay fever?
Often, yes, but not immediately. The gut microbiome modulates immune reactivity over months. A consistent probiotic alongside reducing inflammatory foods can dial down seasonal allergies that seem unrelated to diet.
