Energy

Tired is not your personality. It is a mitochondrial problem you can fix.

Real energy is not a caffeine hit. It is your mitochondria turning food and oxygen into ATP, the molecule your cells spend to think, move, repair, and digest. When you feel chronically flat, foggy, or wired-but-tired, the issue is usually upstream: missing B-vitamin cofactors, low iron or B12, poor sleep, blood sugar swings, or mitochondria that have stopped producing efficiently.

Supplements that actually work for energy target the machinery, not the dashboard. Methylated B-vitamins to run the Krebs cycle. Iron or B12 if your bloods are low. Creatine for cellular ATP buffering. Beetroot or shilajit for an acute boost before training. None of this works if you are sleeping five hours and skipping breakfast, so fix the foundations first.

What is actually happening

  • Mitochondria Make Less ATP

Mitochondria are the energy factories inside every cell. With age, inflammation, and nutrient deficiency they produce less ATP. The result is the same effort returning less output, especially in muscle and brain.

  • Missing B-Vitamin Cofactors

B1, B2, B3, B6, B12, and folate are non-negotiable cofactors in the Krebs cycle. If even one is low, ATP production stalls. Vegetarians, heavy drinkers, and people on metformin or proton pump inhibitors are most at risk.

  • Iron Or B12 Deficiency

Iron carries oxygen to cells. B12 is needed for red blood cell formation and nerve function. Low ferritin or low active B12 will flatten energy long before a full anaemia diagnosis appears on bloods.

  • Blood Sugar Rollercoaster

Spikes and crashes in glucose feel like energy swings. After a high-sugar meal, insulin overshoots and energy crashes within ninety minutes. Stable blood sugar gives stable energy.

How we think about it

STEP 1

Foundation: Fuel The Machinery

Start with a B-complex daily. It is the cheapest, highest-leverage move for chronic low energy. Take it with breakfast, not late, because B-vitamins are mildly stimulating.

STEP 2

Build: Cover Your Gaps

If bloods show low ferritin or low B12, add a targeted iron or methyl-B12 supplement. If you train, add creatine for ATP buffering. This is where most of the felt-energy gains arrive.

STEP 3

Acute: Pre-Performance Lift

For a workout, a long meeting, or a hard afternoon, use beetroot (nitric oxide, better oxygen delivery) or shilajit (mitochondrial support). These are tools, not daily habits.

Common questions

How is this different from caffeine?
Caffeine blocks adenosine, the molecule that tells you you are tired. It masks the signal. The supplements here fuel the actual energy-production machinery (mitochondria, B-vitamin cofactors, iron for oxygen delivery). You can use both, but if you only ever lean on caffeine you are running a deeper debt.
How long before I feel more energy?
B-vitamins and electrolytes can shift things within a week. Creatine takes three to four weeks to saturate muscle and brain. Iron and B12 correction can take eight to twelve weeks if your ferritin is genuinely low. Beetroot and shilajit are felt within the same day.
Should I get bloods done first?
Yes if you have been chronically tired for more than three months. Ask for full blood count, ferritin, active B12, vitamin D, TSH, and HbA1c. These cover the most common fixable causes (anaemia, B12 deficiency, low D, thyroid, blood sugar).
Can I take iron if my levels are normal?
No. Iron is one of the few supplements where more is not better. Excess iron is pro-inflammatory and can damage the liver. Only supplement if ferritin is below the reference range (or below 50 for women with menstrual cycles, which is when symptoms usually start).
Is creatine safe long term?
Creatine has one of the strongest safety records in the supplement world, with decades of data in healthy adults. It is not a stimulant, does not affect kidneys in healthy people, and you do not need to cycle off. The main side effect is mild water retention.
What about adrenal fatigue?
Adrenal fatigue is not a recognised medical diagnosis. What people call adrenal fatigue is usually chronic stress, poor sleep, low ferritin, sub-clinical thyroid, or burnout. Test for those first. If cortisol is genuinely dysregulated, an adaptogen like ashwagandha helps.
