Healthy Ageing

Ageing is biology you can influence, not a date on a calendar.

How well you age is mostly written at the cellular level: mitochondria that still produce ATP cleanly, telomeres that have not eroded too far, low chronic inflammation, mineralised bones, supple joints, and skin with intact collagen. None of this happens by accident after 40. It is the result of daily inputs (food, sleep, movement, sun) and a few targeted supplements that fill predictable gaps as the body's manufacturing slows down.

The goal is not to look 25 again. It is to keep your healthspan as close to your lifespan as possible, which means staying strong, mobile, clear-headed, and metabolically flexible into your 70s and 80s. The supplements here support that work. They are not a substitute for resistance training, eight hours of sleep, and protein at every meal.

What is actually happening

  • Mitochondrial Decline

Mitochondria lose efficiency and quantity with age. Less ATP means less energy for tissue repair, immune function, and brain clarity. Supporting mitochondria (CoQ10, PQQ, NAD+ precursors) is foundational.

  • Collagen And Connective Tissue Loss

Type I and III collagen production drops by roughly 1 percent per year after 30. Skin thins, joints stiffen, and tendons lose elasticity. Marine collagen plus vitamin C provides the building blocks the body uses.

  • Bone Density And Mineral Routing

After menopause and after 60 in men, bone loss accelerates. Vitamin D3 alongside K2 is the routing system: D3 absorbs calcium, K2 directs it into bone instead of arteries.

  • Inflammaging

Chronic low-grade inflammation, dubbed inflammaging, is one of the strongest predictors of biological age. Resveratrol, omega-3, and curcumin lower the systemic load.

How we think about it

STEP 1

Foundation: Mineralise And Rebuild

Start with two daily layers most South Africans are short on: D3+K2 for bone and mineral routing, and marine collagen for skin, joints, and connective tissue. These work over months, not days.

STEP 2

Build: Cellular Resilience

Add a mitochondrial or longevity layer: NMN, CoQ10+PQQ, or resveratrol depending on your priority. These support energy production and cellular signalling that decline with age.

STEP 3

Acute: Targeted Support

For mood and cognition in later years, layer in saffron or L-theanine during stressful periods. For joint flares, add curcumin short-term. These are tools you reach for, not daily habits.

Common questions

At what age should I start a healthy ageing protocol?
The honest answer is the 30s, because that is when collagen synthesis, NAD+, and mitochondrial efficiency start to slip. In practice, most people start in their 40s or 50s when they notice the shift. Earlier is better but it is never too late.
Do I really need both D3 and K2 together?
Yes, especially if you supplement vitamin D at higher doses. D3 increases calcium absorption from the gut. Without enough K2, that calcium can end up in artery walls and soft tissue instead of bone. The combined formula is safer and more effective.
Is NMN actually proven to slow ageing?
NMN reliably raises NAD+ levels, which is a measurable marker. Whether that translates to longer lifespan in humans is still being studied. What it does seem to support is energy, exercise capacity, and metabolic markers in people over 40. Reasonable to take, do not expect a miracle.
How much protein do I need as I age?
More than the standard guidelines say. Adults over 50 do better on 1.2 to 1.6 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight, spread across three meals. Without it, sarcopenia (muscle loss) accelerates regardless of which supplements you take.
Should I take resveratrol with red wine?
The doses studied for resveratrol are far higher than what wine delivers, so wine is not a substitute. If anything, alcohol after 50 is one of the strongest accelerators of cellular ageing. Take the supplement, skip the nightly glass.
Can these replace HRT or testosterone therapy?
No. Supplements support cellular health but they do not replace hormones. If you have menopause symptoms or low testosterone affecting quality of life, talk to a hormone-literate doctor. The two strategies are complementary, not substitutes.
