Sunscreen

Sunscreen: mineral, reef-safe, made for SA sun.

South Africa sits under one of the harshest UV loads on the planet. Summer indices regularly hit 11 or 12, which is the WHO's top "extreme" band. That changes how we think about sunscreen: it is not a holiday product, it is a daily one, and the ingredient list matters as much as the SPF on the front.

Wellness Tree stocks mineral sunscreens only. That means zinc oxide and titanium dioxide as the active filters, not oxybenzone, octinoxate or avobenzone. Mineral filters sit on the skin and reflect UV, they do not absorb into the bloodstream the way chemical filters can, and they are reef-safe (a real consideration if you swim in our oceans). We look for short ingredient lists, non-comedogenic formulas, and brands that publish their full formulation.

What is actually happening

  • Mineral vs chemical (and why we pick mineral)

Mineral filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) reflect UV at the skin surface. Chemical filters like oxybenzone absorb UV and have been detected in bloodstream and breastmilk studies. For daily wear, mineral is the more conservative choice.

  • SPF 30 vs SPF 50 (small difference, both work)

SPF 30 blocks about 97 percent of UVB, SPF 50 blocks about 98 percent. The bigger factors are how much you apply and how often you reapply. Most people use a quarter of the amount they should.

  • Reef-safe matters for ocean ecosystems

Oxybenzone and octinoxate are linked to coral bleaching and have been banned in Hawaii, Palau and parts of the Caribbean. If you swim at Clifton, Plett or Sodwana, mineral sunscreen keeps that residue out of the water.

  • Daily wear, even when cloudy

Up to 80 percent of UVA passes through cloud cover. UVA is the wavelength linked to ageing and long-term skin damage, and it is present from sunrise to sunset year round in SA. Apply in the morning, reapply every two hours outdoors.

How we think about it

DAILY FACE

One face SPF you'll actually wear

The best sunscreen is the one you reapply. For daily use we look for a non-comedogenic mineral formula that wears under makeup and does not leave a heavy white cast.

BODY AND OUTDOORS

A body sunscreen for real sun exposure

For beach days, hiking and sport, you want a water-resistant mineral formula with SPF 30 to 50. Apply generously (a shot-glass for full body) and reapply after swimming or heavy sweat.

KIDS AND SENSITIVE SKIN

Gentler formulas for the smallest faces

Kids and sensitive skin do best on fragrance-free mineral sunscreens with short ingredient lists. Same active (zinc oxide), softer base.

Common questions

Why only mineral sunscreens?
Chemical filters like oxybenzone and octinoxate are absorbed through skin and show up in blood and urine in CDC studies. They are also linked to coral bleaching. Mineral filters (zinc oxide, titanium dioxide) sit on the surface and reflect UV. For daily, long-term wear we think the mineral route is the more sensible default.
Will it leave a white cast?
Modern mineral formulas use micronised (not nano) zinc that blends in much better than the old lifesaver-zinc you remember. Buub and Eleven 2 are particularly good on light to medium skin. On deeper skin tones, the Badger Clear Zinc range gives the cleanest finish.
Is SPF 50 worth it over SPF 30?
In SA summer, yes, marginally. SPF 30 blocks 97 percent of UVB, SPF 50 blocks 98 percent. The bigger lever is application: most people use a quarter of what's needed. Pick the SPF you'll actually reapply.
How often should I reapply?
Every two hours when outdoors, and immediately after swimming, towelling off or heavy sweat. For office days indoors, a single morning application is usually enough.
Is mineral sunscreen safe for babies?
Mineral sunscreen is recommended for children over 6 months. Under 6 months, the guidance is shade and clothing rather than sunscreen on skin. Badger Kids SPF 40 is pediatrician-tested and fragrance-free.
Can I use this with my skincare routine?
Yes. Sunscreen goes on last in the morning routine, after moisturiser and before makeup. Mineral formulas layer well over hyaluronic acid or vitamin C serums.
What does reef-safe actually mean?
Reef-safe is unregulated as a label, but in practice it means free of oxybenzone, octinoxate, octocrylene and homosalate. All sunscreens we stock are reef-safe by that standard.
