The story

SOiL is one of the few essential oil brands in the world that genuinely controls every step from soil to sealed bottle. The McMurray family farms in Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal, where they grow, distil, blend, and bottle their organic essential oils on-site. No outsourced cultivation, no anonymous middlemen, no third-party blending facility.

This matters because the essential oil industry has a documented authenticity problem. Adulteration with synthetic isolates, dilution with carrier oils, and origin fraud are common at the wholesale level. By controlling cultivation and distillation in-house, SOiL can guarantee what is in the bottle matches what is on the label. The certifications (Soil Association, Ecocert, Fairwild) are the paperwork; the vertical integration is the substance behind it.
Pure, powerful, and plant-based. We grow what we sell and we sell what we'd use on our own families.

What makes them different

  • 01

    Vertical Integration

They farm, distil, blend, and bottle on the same Zululand land. The chain of custody is the family, not a supply network. No anonymous wholesalers in between.

  • 02

    Organic Certification

Soil Association Organic, Ecocert, and Fairwild certified across the range. The certifications come with audits, soil tests, and supply chain documentation that most aromatherapy brands cannot match.

  • 03

    Therapeutic Grade

Distillation parameters (temperature, pressure, duration) are tuned per botanical to preserve the volatile compounds that give each oil its character. Frankincense from SOiL smells different to mass-market frankincense because the distillation is different.

  • 04

    South African Roots

Founded and run from KwaZulu-Natal. The brand exports globally but stays grounded in South African agriculture, Fairtrade pricing, and local employment.

About this brand

Common questions customers ask about the brand and its products.

Are SOiL oils therapeutic grade?
Yes. Every batch is gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) tested to verify the chemical profile matches what the label claims. SOiL controls distillation parameters (temperature, pressure, duration) per botanical to preserve the volatile compounds. Therapeutic grade is not a regulated term, but SOiL's vertical integration and GC-MS testing put their oils in the strictest end of the spectrum.
What does 'certified organic' actually mean here?
SOiL holds Soil Association Organic (UK) and Ecocert certifications. Both require annual audits of the farm, soil tests, supply chain traceability, and zero synthetic pesticides or fertilisers across the cultivation. The certifications also cover processing and labelling, so the chain from plant to bottle is documented end-to-end.
Where are the oils grown and distilled?
On the McMurray family farm in Zululand, KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Cultivation, harvesting, distillation, blending, and bottling all happen on the same farm. This vertical integration is the brand's biggest differentiator and the reason they can guarantee what is in the bottle.
Why is SOiL more expensive than supermarket essential oils?
Three reasons: organic cultivation costs more than conventional, vertical integration removes middlemen markups but absorbs production costs, and GC-MS testing is expensive. Cheap essential oils are typically synthetic isolates or solvent-extracted dilutions sold as 'essential oils' through legal loopholes. The price difference reflects what is actually in the bottle.
Can I use SOiL oils directly on my skin?
Most essential oils require dilution in a carrier oil (jojoba, sweet almond, or SOiL's own rosehip) before topical application. A safe starting dilution is 2 percent: 12 drops of essential oil per 30ml of carrier. A few oils (lavender, tea tree) tolerate neat application on small spots like blemishes or bites, but daily wide-area neat application is not recommended for any oil. Always patch test before broad use.
Are these safe during pregnancy and with children?
Some yes, some no. Pregnancy-unsafe oils in the SOiL range include rosemary, clary sage, juniper, and basil. Child-friendly oils include lavender (any age), Roman chamomile (3 months+), and eucalyptus radiata (3 years+; not the harsher globulus). For specific guidance, consult your healthcare provider or message us on WhatsApp; we can suggest combinations from the SOiL range for your situation.
How long do the oils last?
Citrus oils (lemon, sweet orange, mandarin, grapefruit, bergamot) are most fragile and best used within 12 to 18 months of opening. Most other oils stay fresh for 2 to 3 years if stored in a cool, dark place with the cap tightly sealed. SOiL's bottles are amber glass to protect against UV oxidation. Refrigeration extends citrus shelf life if you use them slowly.
